Terms of Use
These terms are the agreement between you and Trybe (Pty) Ltd ("Trybe", "we") for use of the Trybe app and this website. Using Trybe means you accept them. If you do not, do not use it.
They are governed by South African law, and the courts of South Africa have jurisdiction. Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 that cannot lawfully be limited.
1. Who may use Trybe
- You must be at least 13.
- If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must confirm your account before you can use it. See the Privacy Policy, section 8.
- One account per person. Additional accounts created to gain a competitive advantage will be removed, along with any results they produced.
- You are responsible for what happens under your account.
2. What Trybe costs
Trybe is free to download and free to use for your first 14 days. The 14 days start when your account becomes usable — after your email is verified, and after a guardian has confirmed the account if you are under 18 — rather than at sign-up, so none of it is spent waiting. You are not asked for payment details to start, and you do not have to do anything to begin it.
After that, Trybe is a subscription: $1.99 a month or $21.00 a year. If you have not subscribed when the 14 days end, the app locks — you can still sign in, open an invitation, export your data and delete your account, but the rest of Trybe is unavailable until you subscribe.
Those prices are in US dollars and are the list prices. Your subscription is sold by Apple or Google, in your own currency, at their own price for your country, and the exact amount is shown to you before you confirm.
A subscription renews automatically until you cancel it. The subscription is between you and the App Store or Google Play — we never see or handle your payment details, and we cannot cancel it for you. You cancel in the App Store or Google Play, under the subscription settings of your own store account. Cancelling stops the next payment; you keep access to Trybe until the period you have already paid for has run out.
Refunds are handled by the store you subscribed through, under that store's policy, not by us. Nothing in this section limits any right you have under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
3. Your account
We sign you in with a code sent to your email address rather than a password. Keep access to that inbox secure — anyone who has it can reach your account. Tell us if you think someone else has.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and where we do we will say why unless telling you would help someone evade the rule.
4. Fair play
Trybe is a competition, and a competition with no integrity is not worth entering. You agree not to:
- Submit activity you did not do, however it was generated.
- Use a device, app or script to manufacture or inflate measurements.
- Run more than one account, or have someone else compete as you.
- Submit a proof photo that is not yours, or not of what it claims to be.
- Interfere with scoring, verification or the leaderboard.
We run automated integrity checks on submitted activity. Where a result looks manufactured, we may discount the activity, void a result, remove a trophy, or close the account. We aim to be right, and where you think we are not, the correction process in the Privacy Policy (section 9) applies to competitive results as much as to anything else.
5. Challenges between users
A challenge is an arrangement between the people in it. Its stakes — a coffee, breakfast, bragging rights, whatever the "stakes" field says — are between those people. Trybe records what was agreed and who won. It is not a party to the arrangement, does not enforce it, and holds nothing on anyone's behalf.
Trybe is not a gambling, betting or wagering service. Do not use it as one. Do not set stakes that are unlawful where any participant lives, and do not use a challenge to run a lottery, a pool, or anything that requires a licence. Challenges with money stakes will be removed.
The host of a challenge decides who is in it and may remove a participant. A join code is an invitation: treat it as one, and understand that anyone you forward it to can use it.
6. Content you post
You keep ownership of your photos, messages and challenge descriptions. You give us the permission we need to store them, show them to the people you shared them with, and generate the share cards and result images the app produces. That permission is limited to operating Trybe and ends when you delete the content or your account.
Do not post content that:
- Harasses, threatens, bullies or impersonates anyone.
- Is hateful towards people on the basis of who they are.
- Is sexual, violent or otherwise unsuitable for a general audience — Trybe is 13+.
- Is somebody else's to post.
- Promotes self-harm, disordered eating, or unsafe training practices.
- Advertises anything, or exists to recruit people off the platform.
You can report content and block people from inside the app. We review reports and remove what breaks these rules. We do not pre-screen everything posted, and we are not responsible for what other users post — but we will act on it when we are told.
7. Health, safety, and what Trybe is not
Trybe is not a medical device and gives no medical advice. Nothing in the app — a target, a streak, a challenge someone set you, a notification telling you your streak is at risk — is a recommendation about your health.
Exercise carries risk. Competitive exercise, against people who may be fitter than you, carries more. Talk to a doctor before starting a new activity, particularly if you have a condition, are pregnant, are recovering from injury, or are returning after a long break. Stop if something hurts. A streak is not worth an injury, and no challenge on Trybe is worth training through pain for.
Activity measurements come from your phone, your watch or a connected service. They are estimates. Do not treat them as clinically accurate, and do not make health decisions on them.
8. Health app connections
Connecting Apple Health, Health Connect or Strava is optional, separate from these terms, and requires its own explicit consent. Accepting these terms does not connect anything and does not consent to health data processing. See the Privacy Policy, section 2.
Where you connect a third-party service, that service's own terms apply to your relationship with it, in addition to these.
9. Availability
We aim to keep Trybe running and will not pretend it always will be. Features may change, and parts of the service may be unavailable for maintenance or for reasons outside our control. Where a challenge is affected by an outage we will do what is reasonable to resolve it fairly.
Trybe is provided as-is to the fullest extent the law allows. To the extent permitted by law, and without limiting your rights under the Consumer Protection Act, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of it.
10. Business accounts
Organisations may create business accounts and run challenges for their people. The administrator of a business account sees participation and results for challenges their organisation runs. They do not see, and cannot request, any member's underlying health data. Joining an organisation challenge is a choice each employee makes for themselves.
A business account buys seats — one for each person it wants on Trybe, from 2 upwards. Seats cost R399 per seat per year or R39 per seat per month, in South African rand, and the first 14 days after a business is verified are free. Employees do not pay while their company holds a seat for them.
Business seats are billed by Payfast, not by the App Store or Google Play: this is a service sold to an organisation for its employees. The business administrator pays on Payfast’s own secure pages, and we never see or hold card details. A plan renews automatically until it is cancelled from the business account in the app, and cancelling stops the next payment while the seats stay usable until the period already paid for ends. Seats added part-way through a period are charged for the remainder of it. Refunds are covered by our refund policy, and nothing here limits any right you have under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
11. Changes
We may update these terms. Where a change materially affects you, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Trybe after that means you accept the change; if you do not, delete your account.
