Doing it alone is why people stop.
Almost every self-improvement app asks you to compete with yourself. It works for about eleven days. What actually keeps people going is far older and far pettier than any app: not wanting to lose to someone you know.
Trybe is built on that, and it does not much care what the challenge is. Steps, training, reading every night, a month off the takeaways — you set it, you pull in the people who will make it matter, and a leaderboard settles it. Dare today. Earn glory tomorrow.
What we decided early
Three choices that shaped everything else.
You pay us, not an advertiser.
Trybe is a subscription, and that is the whole business model: no ads, no third-party tracking, nothing about you sold, and no “premium leaderboard”. An app that makes money from attention ends up designed to take more of it, and a competition where the person who paid more wins is not a competition. Everyone on a subscription has exactly the same app.
Nobody has to be the referee.
Where a phone can already measure it, progress comes straight from the device, by one calculation applied to everyone, on the server. Where it cannot, the challenge says so up front — a photo, or the honour system — rather than pretending to a precision it does not have.
Health data gets treated as health data.
Under POPIA it is special personal information, and it is handled as such: used to score the challenges you joined, never sold, never used for advertising, and never readable by another user. You can take a full export of it, or have the account destroyed.
